If GMagAO-X cannot secure the funding needed to maintain schedule, other instruments might be developed at other observatories that can perform as well or better than GMagAO-X.
Risk Effects:
GMagAO-X is trying to achieve the best performance possible with today's technology. However, as technology advances, we can expect future instruments to exceed the capabilities of GMagAO-X. This means that GMagAO-X has a limited window of opportunity to achieve a strong science impact. To maximize the GMagAO-X science mission, we need to complete the instrument development on schedule, and we need to take advantage of any opportunities to get on sky early (see #22).

Initial Risk Notes:
We need about $6M to procure the suite of DMs needed for GMagAO-X. The lead time for these items is 2-3 years. If we determine that we need 5 microns stroke, the cost will be around $12M and the lead time 3-5 years. To hold schedule, we need to order the DMs pretty soon after the December 2023 PDR. We likely need to be ordering other long lead items in 2024.

Explanation for cost risk:
Risk mitigation list:
Secure funding sufficient (around $10M) to procure long lead items in 2023-2024
