today I came across this problem as well... I guess, there is no fix, yet?

A minimal example of the problem is this:
{\(1\)|2}

Unfortunately there is no fix. This is partly because of some compromises on usability in the formation of the regular expressions. I tested the examples form the conversations on the Moodle forums quite extensively and could not devise a simple solution short of a new checkbox option. When I return to this I will look at your example. My apologies if this has occupied your time, and I feel I should at least document this issue here
