How do I install the latest version of mpv on Linux Mint Debian Edition without using Software Manager (which has an outdated version)?

The instructions on mpv's site under "Installation" only says this:
"It is recommended to use the latest version from the git master branch."
but it doesn't explain anything on how to use that "git master branch", all I see is a zip and tar.gz file of apparently the source code of mpv (of which I have no idea how to use in any meaningful way).
Then under "Linux packages" on the same mpv "Installation" page it says this:
"Distributions usually package outdated, unmaintained, and unsupported versions of mpv. This is especially true for popular distributions like Debian and Ubuntu. It is recommended to use mpv-build or third-party packages instead. All of these packages are unofficial."
Again, I'm not really sure what to do with this. I don't want to use a version of mpv that is outdated, unsupported, and potentially has security flaws in it that have been fixed in newer versions.
My next step was to try using the generic instructions for mpv-build, and while the installation seemed to be going well as I was copy/pasting the commands into terminal, I ran into a brick wall with this error message during the sudo ./install command:
Install data not found. Run this command in build directory root.
I'm not sure why it even said that. I thought I already was in the build directory root???
Finally, I tried installing the .deb file from the "Debian multimedia" link on mpv's Installation page, and when I double clicked on the file to install it, I hit a brick wall yet again with an error that I have no idea how to fix:
Error: Dependency is not satisfiable: libarchive13t64 (>= 3.4.0)
I'm literally at my wit's end with this. I wish there was just an app image file I could run or something. At this point I feel like I should just install from the software manager and put up with the fact that it's outdated.
If anyone can help, I would appreciate it...

Install the version your distro provides, just know that it's not supported upstream so any bug reports should go to your distro instead.

I can't remember if I'm on LDME or Linux Mint..anyway apt show mpv
displays 0.39.0+fruit-0build1~jammy
that is the latest which came out September 2024.

oh it does say ppa ...so yeah I'm on Linux Mint. LDME can't do ppa sources. So in this case pretty much have to compile your own which is gonna be pretty difficult with all the dependencies or just wait till it gets included in apt sources. You could try SMPlayer in the meantime which is based on mpv.
