I know that @mustafa0x said that an italic/slanted variant is highly unlikely due to insufficient funding (#17). However, it shouldn't be too hard to implement a semi-bold variant, considering that there is already a bold variant. I prefer semi-bold over bold because it still stands out but it is less obnoxious in my opinion.

Agreed.

We can ask @khaledhosny for an estimate and see if there are sufficient funders for it.

I need to have a look if the font sources are interpolatable, if not it is probably going to be a bit of work. We are also using FontForge, which is not the most interpolation friendly, so we will need to also move the sources to UFO, and we might as well turn Katib into a variable font. Or we can do it old school and draw a medium weight, but it is probably going to be much more work not less.

ScheherazadeNew 4.0 was recently released; it adds a medium and semibold variant. ScheherazadeNew also has several other improvements — some of which would be good to add to Kitab. Might be worth see how we could "merge with upstream". I assume it would be difficult. Might even be easier to reapply all changes we made to our fork to ScheherazadeNew.
