Quarto Workshop 2024 - Introduction to Quarto for NMFS Reports

Instructors: Jon Peake & Eli Holmes (NMFS Open Science), with quest speakers

Dates: Nov-Dec 2024

Overview

Quarto (and similarly RMarkdown) have been used by many NOAA Fisheries teams and projects to help make report writing more efficient and reproducible. These tools allow you to create scripts for tables and figures and scripts for data wrangling and cleaning tasks. You can combine these with files with the text. When the data are updated, the entire report can be recreated with a few commands. Although the time to translate a report into a template format can be significant, the time-saved in the long-run is significant and this greatly increases the ability to 'hand off' reports to new staff as it is clear exactly what analysis goes into each piece.

Aims and Objectives of the fall Quarto workshops

The fall 2024 Quarto workshops are a 'working' workshop. We will offer four 1-hour intro to Quarto virtual classes, but also work directly with teams to help them with their report goals. For some this will be clarifying goals and deciding on next steps while for others this will be getting into coding and creating repositories and packages.

  • Provide introductory training in Quarto
  • Provide 1:1 help and coaching for teams looking to transform to Quarto reports
  • Themed co-work sessions with said teams to help them make progress
