Thank you for reporting this issue. The creepiness didn't get to me until is saw the supporting screen shot. You are right, and I now realise how serious of an issue this actually is. Our design team has been working over the weekend to diminish the creepiness with, i must say, impressive results:

I think the apps distinct design helps you find it more easily. I won't contest adding a lens flare though. Just to spice it up a bit.

My suggestion:

Reminiscent of Apple's own push notification service icon. And I like how cutting a bit off the actual icon distinguishes it enough from actual apps with badges.

Less tongue-in-cheek than the other one though ;)
