Having separately built and distributes backends would allow:

  • Smaller downloads
  • Independent updates
  • Easy way to download 3rd party backends (ala store way)

There is only one issue, how can it be done so it does not take longer to start using the application? If somebody has to choose what types of signatures they want to be making and wait for it to download after they just waited for the application itself could be weird/annoying. Maybe the official distribution should still contain the main ones?
