is it possible to have a map 100% in French (currently the map is in the recipient language for countries like Mauritania or Tunisia)? #57

Question from MFA. Not sure it makes sense to me...

Well, we have three options:

  • use the OSM-fr style, which is a derivative of the default OSM style, but with all names in French: http://tile.openstreetmap.fr/?zoom=6&lat=17.0673&lon=-3.60379&layers=B0000000FFFFFF ; I'm really against such an option, as the default OSM style is tragically ugly, so is the French version
  • generate a copy of the HOT style and serve ourselves the tiles: too much work and in particular maintenance for the given scope imho
  • have a paid account on MapBox, to get their nice background with French labels

I would suggest in any case to take time to take decision.

Maybe this is something that the OIF (Organisation internationale de la Francophonie) would be interested in: serve a worldwide tiles with French labels, by the way. I should talk to them.

Also, maybe OKFN should invest in this direction: many many projects made by OKFN have and will have map embedded, so it can make sense to set up a owned tile server with some styles dedicated to displaying data on top of them (i.e. sober, letting space for data).
