It's quite recommended to store password outside the ~/.pg_service.conf but in a ~/.pgpass file.
It could be really helpful to resolve the password from this complementary file when it does exist.

Just for making the point, I wouldn't say storing a pw in clear text is ever "recommended". Pgpass support would still be very welcome
