We did a lot of work on how scientists want to describe their software, not as code but as a scientific artifact. This resulted in the OntoSoft ontology for scientific software metadata: http://ontosoft-earthcube.github.io/ontosoft/ontosoft%20ontology/v1.0.1/doc/.
The metadata is organized in 6 broad categories based on what a scientist wants to do, which is very useful viewpoint to approaching documentation, reuse, etc. See the 6 categories in the figure of section 2 of this ontology document: http://ontosoft-earthcube.github.io/ontosoft/ontosoft%20ontology/v1.0.1/doc/.
The OntoSoft ontology was used for CodeMeta: https://codemeta.github.io/, which looked at core metadata for software.
All the work above can inform how we document models. But more needs to be done because models are a very special kind of software.
