@derberg Look into the Unconference format as well; it has been well received. |

I am really looking forward to the mentorship program or probably other open source programs such as GSOC that AsyncAPI might be taking part in as I would love to participate in them because I think it is an amazing initiative and a great starting point to get to know the community better and get involved in open source itself |

Happy to stay in the loop and find ways to organize meetups/microconferences! |

FYI, offline I contacted several representatives I know from different companies to check with them if they would be interested in the topic of meetups/micro-conferences or know someone who would. Sharing this with you for transparency reasons. |

I'd love to continue working on the Ambassador program if everyone agrees. It would be a pleasure to coordinate it this next year! |

Looks like there are no objections to any of the topics ❤️ We have volunteers for many topics. We only need volunteers for:

I want to continue here something that I started last year. I want us to continue having an open discussion on the goals for AsyncAPI community building/maintenance.
These are the top 3 items I think we need to explore in 2023:
These are the items we should continue investing in 2023:
New items for 2023
Code of conduct refresh
This is our current CoC. It talks about "project team" that doesn't exist and it mentiones Fran Mendez as a single point of contact. I know Fran, and have no problem that he is there. But the thing is, I know Fran privately, and the majority of people do not.
We are at the stage of community growth where it is time to start thinking about setting future-proof CoC.
The community consists of people from totally different cultures, with different skin colour and different gender. We need to ensure all people can feel safe here and that there is a way to get professional help.
After attending this presentation and doing my research here and there, my opinion is that in case of code of conduct, there is no place for improvisation and we need a clear answer and procedure to react when it is needed.
The goal is not just copy/paste the code of conduct from some other community. The goal is to research how different groups implement CoC. Consult with Linux Foundation best practices (I asked Joanna Lee at the conference if we can reach out to her, and she answered "definitely").
We need:
This is not a simple "2-weeks" task but a long project that needs special attention and empathy.
Open Collective funds redistribution with contributors
Currently, we have $80k on our Open Collective. In 2023 we will spend some on:
Lots of money will stay, and I propose that in 2023 we define a way to use this money to pay maintainers and contributors for their work.
Why? we have many contributors whose companies do not pay to work on AsyncAPI. It is nice to have passionate people, but we should also try to pay for work whenever possible.
I do not know how and who to pay. This needs to be explored:
The goal would be that in 2023 we start spending money to pay for work that is super important but work that nobody has time to do in their spare time.
Case studies collection at scale
We need to start providing the community with real production case studies and use cases to prove that AsyncAPI is adopted by many.
I know from many private discussions that AsyncAPI is used by many. The problem is, though, that in many cases, AsyncAPI is used internally only, and this work cannot see daylight in many cases.
We have a first official case study that will be published this year. And the goal is to scale the list up a lot in 2023.
Collecting data, driving discussions, and awaiting approvals take a lot of time, and it needs to be a community effort. We need a group of people experienced with EDA: to get in touch with people happy to talk about AsyncAPI, run interviews and publish these on the AsyncAPI website.
Items for 2023 that require continuation
AsyncAPI Ambassador list growth
Ambassador program is a fact now. We even have 3 ambassadors. Now we need to drive it forward:
AsyncAPI Mentorship and other initiatives
We need to continue doing this and have someone driving this topic forward. It requires a lot of coordination, but in exchange, we are bringing many people passionate about open source into the community and bringing many positive vibes into the project. A more diverse community with different experience levels makes the community more creative.
AsyncAPI Conf, but this time "AsyncAPI Conf 2023 on a Tour"
We do AsyncAPI Conference 3y in raw already. Always online. We need a change.
We tried to do an in-person event this year. It made me realize how complex and expensive such events are. Also, after looking on other conferences and talking to people, looks like people start travel, but do not like to travel far. Thus better I think is to have few smaller events around the world, instead of one big event that is not accessible to all.
I started my research on a different type of in-person conference here and there. I'm realistic, though, having it from idea to reality, 2023 doesn't sound like a feasible year to have "API Summit" a thing.
I like experimenting and trying new things. So I was thinking of refreshing the brand of AsyncAPI Conference with the name:
AsyncAPI Conf 2023 on a Tour
.So instead of one event, we should host multiple 1 day or 1/2 day micro conferences in different locations across the planet.
In short:
As a result, as a side effect, we may build a brand that in 2024 can be turned into a branded meetup that anyone can organize anywhere they want with their sponsors.

Let the discussion begin.
