As decided in the latest neume open office (03/23) we are going to transition our community communication over to github discussions in the coming weeks.
The rationale for this is as follows:
HIFI Lab's Discord has served a purpose as a staging point for incubation, but as neume grows into an ecosystem-wide project, we need a comms platform that is more accessible and open
As we increasingly work with other open-source projects, we need easily linkable conversations across comms platforms
As the complexity of build path increases, with multiple working groups focussing on different areas, we need an environment that supports threading, which discord sucks for
As the project develops and the value of record of communication increases, we need to have permanence
Have our conversation next to our code is going to be a massive benefit
And so, I am going to be building out this section of the github to be a nice new home for our conversation. Please, if you have any ideas or thoughts, let me know.
In terms of things that we lose with this transition, I see two key elements, voice call functionality and direct messaging. For the former, I have already set up a google meet within the open office meeting invite for us to use. For the latter, I suggest that we continue to use discord direct messaging and/or telegram where convenient.
