(I admit I have no knowledge of how Nominatim attempts to expand abbreviations)
Depending on how I abbreviated different parts of the name, I got different results:
110 Fort Douglas Boulevard found the correct node
110 S Fort Douglas Boulevard found segments of the road
110 South Fort Douglas Boulevard found no results
What result did you expect?
When the result in the right place and just named wrongly:
When the result missing completely:
I expect all three of these searches to find the same node that was linked above
Further details
Correct addresses in Utah will make use of name:prefix and name:full on the road. In this specific case, the length of Fort Douglas Blvd is tagged:
name=Fort Douglas Boulevard
name:prefix=South
And the University Guest House is tagged:
addr:housenumber=110
addr:street=South Fort Douglas Boulevard
As the 'South' part of the address is technically part of the street name, but rarely signed, and therefore doesn't belong in name.
I am even more confused by this, because when I tried search for something else nearby (a random dorm) with the address 80 South Connor Road, I get different results:
80 Connor Road finds the correct building
80 S Connor Road finds segments of the road
80 South Connor Road finds the correct building (different than above)
Despite the fact that this building and it's street follow the same tagging (name=Connor Road + name:prefix=South, and addr:housenumber=80 + addr:street=South Connor Road)
