How do ephemeral tabs work?

With the recent addition of many new tab navigation options, I'm left wondering how do the new options "Enable ephemeral tabs" and "Auto close ephemeral tabs" work exactly? (Never used VSCode).

I think a detailed explanation for all the new options should be listed in the plugin's README. Another example is "Smart navigation"—super vague!

The best approach is to stick with the default option, as it has been optimized to provide the best experience for most users. The nuances are really unimportant.
