Sound is very delayed in safari after leaving tab and returning

I typically notice this when I've left a tab and come back a lot later, like hours or days later. Today I noticed it after leaving the tab and coming back about 5 minutes later.

I saw this in phetsims/qa#1141. Refreshing the page didn't fix it, I had to use an entirely new tab.
