News portlet does not use effective/expiration dates

If an item is before its effective date, or after its expiration date, the news portlet will still display it.
While I appreciate News Items should probably not be expired, it would be nice if the effective date could be used.

Same happens for Events portlet. Items should be omitted from all content listings except search either when effective date didn't happen yet or when expiration is past.
