ping hostname inside a wifi network fails

hi, I have an issue with one of my apps I am using to configure different wifi modems. The wifi modem has a local hostname called tpwifi.net. I use dart_ping to check the connection to this modem using the hostname. If I have a connection I show the config page. This runs fine when I start the app and when I am connected to the wifi modem during the start. But when I am connected to another wifi network, start the app, and then change the wifi network the ping fails. A workaround is to change the address to the ip address but this is no good workaround due to the fact the other modems have the same ip.

It also happens to modems which don't have a working internet connection only...

Any ideas why that is happening?
