Replacing Naia's [transient_message] implementation with the engine's wesnoth.show_popup_dialog function using this patch continues to exhibit the same bug:

The string in question is clearly correct, so I'm assuming there's a layout bug in either GUI2 or Pango:

{CHARACTER_1ST_TIME_HELP (Anlindë) ( _ "<b>Anlindë</b> is an <b>Elvish Ascetic</b>. She has vast experience with offensive magic, but she also has the ability to cure allied units of poison. Keep in mind that she is the only unit of her kind.")}

I'm on Debian sid, for the record.
