Multi-language pages and linking of different paths

I am currently working on creating guides. I finished the German pages and now I have to translate the English articles. But it seems that I cannot change the language of the paths. Is there a way to change the breadcrumb path?

Ideally, the breadcrumb would actually be the page titles instead of fragments of the URL. That would provide an automatic translation functionality for the breadcrumb. It would be many more hits on the database to render a page though, unless it was cached.

We actually also wish that the URLs themselves don't need to match across languages, and instead there would be a mapping that connects different language versions of the same article to one another.
