Organize funding to fill in gaps in the ecosystem #12

It would be great if, similar to for example the Python Software Foundation, there was a source of funding to support the ecosystem. The idea is just to contact friends of Rust for some (ideally recurring) donation, and then put together a board that doles out small amounts of cash to specific proposals that seem valuable to the ecosystem in some way.

Rather than going through a board, the core team's preference has been to do this in more of a "matchmaking" style: people can create patreons or other proposals, and we can gather these into a central place that donors can peruse to see what they're interested in funding. That cuts down on overhead and political issues.

Can you explain more about "overhead and political issues"? The "matchmaking" style sounds like it would not be very open/transparent, and might prevent a level playing field.
