Why is the Extension deprecated in VS Code?

Hi. just wondering why such a great extension is deprecated?
I know VS Code can sync your settings out of the box, but with the extension it's way cooler since you have full control over your files threw github.
I guess I can still use it, at least I could install it from the commandline. Lets see ^^
