A common problem with this design is a poor layer adhesion on the z-axis. Actually the print orientation of the model is sub optimal as fdm prints weakest point is the layer adhesion - especially when layers only have a small surface. In this model, two problems come together: some layers indeed have a small surface while at the same time the tension on the z-axis is especially high when the part is mounted on a bike.

Rotating the part to print the y-axis in z-axis direction could possibly solve this problems and highly improve the stability.

The following things have to be done

  • Cut the model in half so that two mirrored parts give on upper/lower half (the middle of the part should face the printer bed)
  • Enlarge the "pillars" on the lower half so that they would have more surface (going from the lock tube to the other end of the part). It should be possible to glue/melt the two halves together on this surface, also bed adhesion would be improved
  • Add "pillars" in the middle of the modell on the upper half (just like the ones next to the screw holes)
  • The middle pillars should have 2x thickness
  • Rotate nuts in order to avoid horizontal bridges on the print (keep in mind that the hole's offset must be slightly increased, therefore the part would need to grow a bit)
  • Add a screw hole (one side head, other side nut) next to the lock tube. The screw hole should be as near as possible to the flat side of the lock holder (trigonometrics needed...)
  • Consider not cutting the model but instead just modelling half of it and mirroring the half.
