if the folder gets renamed to .env or .environments, do you still see a need for a cfg file?

I would suggest to distinguish between transformer "owned" settings & data and user-data. While for configuration data related to transformer a folder / filename can be enforced, I think for the data (xml) we should.

In other words: The name of the place for the project specific data should by adjustable by the dev, where as the transformer configuration should have a default file/name. Probably still adjustable by passing a config file to the transformer.exe

With this idea in mind i would have a .transformer-File which contains the name (then it bubbles up, or a relative path) to the place all xml-files are stored, where as the default is ".transformer".
