Interpreting the Clusters:
Cluster 1 corresponds to patients who have a low risk of radiation-associated dysphagia toxicity (20% RAD).
This cluster includes all patients with nodal stage N0-N1 and all patients with no bilaterally involved nodes.
Members of this cluster also have low spread beyond levels 2A-2B, and no spread to lymph node level 4.
Cluster 2 represents the moderate risk (39% RAD), with bilaterally involved nodes at level 2A-2B but limited
spread beyond levels 2A-2B, and no bilateral involvement beyond levels 1A-2A-2B. The majority, but not all
of the patients are in N-stage 3.
Cluster 3 and Cluster 4 are high-risk clusters (52-55% RAD) and include patients in N-stage 2-3 with a high
degree spread (at least 4+ nodes). Cluster 3 includes all patients with unilateral involvement at levels 1B-2-3,
bilateral involvement at level 3, or those with several involved nodes in the lower levels of the neck (3-4-5).
Cluster 4 includes all patients with a large number (3+) of bilaterally affected nodes.
Description:
Clusters of patterns of involved lymph nodes, taking into account left-right symmetry.
The top row shows a heat map of the % of patients who have affected lymph nodes at each level on either left or right
(left half of map, unilateral) or both (right half of the map, bilateral) sides of the head. Regions outlined in black
are the most informative for determining membership in each cluster. The bottom row shows the % of patients in each cluster
with a given TNM stage or with given toxicity.
Legend:
FT: Feeding Tube, AS: Aspiration, RAD: Radiation-associated dysphagia, T1-2: T-category 1 or 2, T3-T4: T-category 3 or 4,
N0-N1: N-category 0 or 1, N2a-N2b: N-category 2a or 2b, N2c-N3: N-category 2c or 3.
