The ADC closure needs to be expanded to include surface wave effects (including Langmuir turbulence) through the Craik-Leibovich vortex force (and pressure modifications). This requires us to:

  • Add a Stokes drift parameter that varies with depth (currently will be set to zero, in future will be fed into scheme)
  • Add terms to plume second- and third-moment turbulence budgets that result directly from the Craik-Leibovich wave forcing,
  • Add Stokes terms in the closure assumptions for higher-order moments (pressure terms and turbulent transport),
  • Add Stokes terms to sub-plume TKE equations,
  • Add Stokes terms to prognostic equation for dissipation,
  • Decide on new parameters for scheme (dependent on Langmuir number/Langmuir stability length so it can transition between shear-driven and wave-driven turbulence, or gravitationally stable and unstable conditions), and
  • Check whether other closure assumptions (length/time/velocity scales - lateral entrainment/detrainment - vertical entrainment) require modification for wave effects.

Each of these tasks will be added via a separate issue. This issue is to keep track of the total progress towards adding these Stokes effects.
