Instructions

After cloning a Laravel repository from GitHub, you need to perform a few initial setup steps before you can run the application. Here are the commands you typically need to run:

  1. Install dependencies: Open a terminal or command prompt and navigate to the cloned project's directory. Run the following command to install the required dependencies:

    composer install

    This command will read the composer.json file and install the necessary packages into a vendor directory.

  2. Create the .env file: Laravel requires an .env file to store environment-specific configuration. Run the following command to create a copy of the example .env file:

    cp .env.example .env

    After creating the .env file, you'll need to update it with the appropriate configuration values for your local environment, such as database credentials.

  3. Generate the application key: Laravel requires an application key for encryption and other security-related purposes. Run the following command to generate a new application key:

    php artisan key:generate

    This will add an APP_KEY value to your .env file.

  4. Create the storage link (if necessary): If your application utilizes the Laravel storage system, you'll need to create a symbolic link from the public directory to the storage/app/public directory. Run the following command to create the link:

    php artisan storage:link

    This will create a symbolic link that allows you to access files stored in the storage/app/public directory through the public directory.

  5. Run migrations and seed (if necessary): If your application includes database migrations and seeders, you'll need to run the migrations to set up the database schema and seed the necessary data. Run the following command to migrate the database:

    php artisan migrate

    If you have seeders defined, you can run them using the following command:

    php artisan db:seed

    This will populate the database with the initial data defined in the seeders.

After completing these initial setup steps, your Laravel application should be ready to run. You can use the appropriate command (php artisan serve or configure a web server like Apache or Nginx) to start the application and access it in your browser.
