If i understood the documentation correctly, you need to hijack a connection first to be able to use discover, read and write commands.

Is there a way to connect to a device without hijacking the session?

Not yet, but it would be a nice feature to add. I'll consider implementing this for the next release, along with advertisement PDU scanning.
