At some point in time I left a couple "THIS IS SUPER BROKEN" comments in some get_num functions, but things don't currently look/behave super broken. Guess that's what I get for coming back to ancient hastily hacked-together code.

Look this over and double-check there's not some bothersome bug in things, this comment was probably left around after things were slowly put in working order.
