Self Streaming using OBS

Joscha Henningsen edited this page Apr 13, 2023 · 3 revisions

If your course takes place in a lecture hall that is not equipped with automatic live-streaming hardware, but you still want to stream and record it, you can use our selfstreaming feature using OBS:

Install OBS

Download and install OBS from here: https://obsproject.com/ Upon the first start You'll get asked to set a few default values. This can be canceled.

Under Settings -> Video, set some sensible values. We recommend a resolution of 1920x1080 and 30 FPS. A good video bitrate under Settings -> Output would be around 2500 Kbps.

Next add a new source according to this guide: https://obsproject.com/wiki/Sources-Guide. For starters, a screen capture and mic should be sufficient.

Create a lecture

In the admin panel of your course, create a lecture. Make sure that the scheduled time is when you want to stream your lecture and the lecture hall is set to 'Self streaming':

In your stream list, you can now reveal the secrets needed to start the stream:

Head back to OBS and enter these secrets under Settings -> Stream:

You can now start your stream. To be on the safe side, we also recommend recording the lecture locally:
