USI Life Support: To Feed and Grow!

This is accurate as of USI Kolonization Systems (MKS) version 0.50.0 and USI-LS 0.5.0. Please note that these parts are explicitly NOT bundled with UKS. However, they are heavily used by UKS players, and thus are included here for completeness. More details at the USI-LS wiki

Representation of the four types of USI-LS parts

Overview

USI Life Support parts are a relatively simple collection of storage parts and resources which form the foundation of being able to feed your Kerbals, and recycle their waste. There are storage containers, Nom-O-Matics/greenhouses, recyclers, and habitat extenders that are used to manage three resources: Supplies, Mulch, and Fertilizer. Players should review Life Support for more details on how these work.

Storage

There are two types of LifeSupport storage: MiniPaks and Tanks. The MiniPaks are designed to go on the outside of your ships or bases, while tanks are designed to be placed inline.

MiniPaks come in three flavors, one each for Supplies, Mulch, and Fertilizer, whereas tanks have two types: one for Fertilizer and one for both Mulch and Supplies. (The fact that Kerbals use the same kontainer to store both their food and their waste shows just how brave they are!)

Storage Name Mass (T) Max Fertilizer Max Mulch Max Supplies
Life Support MiniPak (Fertilizer) 0.02 100.0
Life Support MiniPak (Mulch) 0.02 100.0
Life Support MiniPak (Supplies) 0.02 100.0
Fertilizer Tank (1.25) 0.60 500.0
Fertilizer Tank (2.5) 5.40 4500.0
Fertilizer Tank (3.75) 18.0 15,000.0
Life Support Tank (1.25) 0.60 10.0 50.0
Life Support Tank (2.5) 5.40 150.0 4,500.0
Life Support Tank (3.75) 18.0 300.0 15,000.0

Nom-O-Matics

Nom-O-Matics are essentially greenhouses that take Mulch, add Fertilizer and ElectricCharge, and produce Supplies. Each unit of Fertilizer will produce more than 10 units of Supplies. There are three sizes:

  • one designed to be placed inline
  • one is designed to terminate with a cupola
  • one that can be placed on any attachment point

All conversion values are shown by day

Nom-O-Matic Mass (T) Max Fertilizer Max Mulch Max ElectricCharge Max Supplies Conversion (F+M+E=S)
Nom-O-Matic 5000 0.154 0 0 0 0 0.2592F + 2.592M + 5,616E => 2.8512S
Nom-O-Matic 25000 0.708 100 100 200 100 1.296F + 12.96M + 28,512E => 14.256S
Nom-O-Matic 25000-I 1.52 300 300 600 300 2.592F + 25.92M + 57,024E => 28.512S

Recyclers

Recyclers allow you to reduce the Supplies used by your Kerbals. There are two sizes. The smaller is designed to be added outside a vessel or base and the larger is designed to be placed inline with other modules.

Note this section may need to be updated for the latest 0.50 numbers

Recycler ElectricCharge per day Recycler % Crew Afected
RT-500 Recycling Module 43,200 60% 1
RT-5000 Recycling Module 1,620,000 79% 3

So one RT-500 will reduce the amount of supplies used by one kerbal by 60%, or reduce the amount of supplies used by 2 kerbals by 30%, etc.
