Initial map pool proposal

For the Steam release, there will need to be a limited MP map pool. This makes the download from Steam be the complete version for matchmaking, and allows us to realistically polish up the maps that players will generally play, mostly artistically (esp. adding SSMF where absent).

As such, let's work out a map pool for initial release. The idea is that every 3-6 months we can rotate in a few new maps that are competitively viable, and thus rotate out a few of the old ones, which should mean every couple years the map pool is completely different, keeping things fresh but still relatively learnable.

Overall, the pool should be a good representative cross-section of the styles of play Zero-K offers. The maps should allow for a fairly wide range of strategies, so that newer players don't feel like they have to do one very specific thing on each map to win, and thus feel overwhelmed. Also, maps that encourage a lot of turtling (Barren, Dead Lands, Badlands, etc.) should be considered very carefully.

#Initial pool proposal:

##1v1:

  • Adansonia - Slightly skewed towards bots, but still options exist for almost all factories.
  • Trojan Hills - Provides a healthy range of strategic options, unit paths, and even useful start locations
  • Titan Duel - good semi-flat map to practice vehicles and importance of corners vs centre
  • Comet Catcher Redux - iconic very macro heavy map
  • Living Lands - Fills the small map void.
  • Fairyland - The design encourages scouting and considering multiple paths, but tends to bog down in the center.

##1v1 if we have more than 6 maps for it in rotation. then add:

  • Ravaged - solid for all factories, somewhat atypical design, but perhaps being a StarCraft clone would be a touch cheap.
  • Lonely Oasis - Fairly solid map, but deceptively only really for bots.
  • Isle of Grief - Provides a lot of variety in games, but only if Gunship cheese gets deflected or isn't used.
  • Red Comet/Red Craters - I think Titan Duel fits the medium-sized flat map role better, but only by a small margin.
  • Eye of Horus - The largest flat map that still works for bots, so pretty healthy for strategic variety, but rather awkward to play on when learning it.
  • Iceland - It's quite large, though it seems viable for all ground factories, but may be a bit difficult for some computers to play at a solid framerate

##2v2 - 4v4:

  • Red Comet
  • Comet Catcher Redux
  • Eye of Horus
  • Desert Needle Small
  • Bandit Plains
  • Tabula

##2v2 - 4v4 if we have more than 6 maps for it in rotation. then add:

  • Titan Duel
  • Valles Marineris

##5v5+ (if automatched):

##FFA (if automatched):

  • La Isla Bonita
  • Ternion

##Chickens (if automatched):

  • Chicken Nuggets (it's built for the gametype)
  • Chicken Farm (same as above)
