HelpHive

InnovateHer Hackathon - Anu, Colleen, Manasvi, Layla

Inspiration

Natural disasters can create overwhelming chaos, often due to fragmented and disorganized information. People affected by disasters often struggle to find timely, localized updates or coordinate resources effectively. HelpHive was inspired by the need for a centralized, user-friendly platform where community members can work together to report, visualize, and respond to emergencies in real time. Our mission is to reduce confusion and improve response efficiency, allowing users to focus on what truly matters during these critical moments.

What it does

HelpHive is a community-based platform designed to streamline communication and collaboration during natural disasters and emergencies.

  1. User Accounts: Users can create an account with a secure username and password. Once logged in, users have access to features such as editing their profile, submitting reports, and managing previously submitted reports.

  2. Disaster Reporting: Users can report emergencies by filling out a simple form. Reports include critical information such as:

    • Disaster Type: Categorized options like wildfire, hurricane, flooding, etc.
    • Severity: Users can rate the severity on a predefined scale, helping prioritize the response.
    • Location: Users enter the disaster's location, which is verified using OpenCage’s API for accurate geocoding.
    • Resource Requests: Users can specify if they need additional help or supplies (e.g., food, water, medical aid).
  3. Interactive Map: Submitted reports are publicly displayed on an interactive map powered by Leaflet. Each report is marked with a pin, showing the exact location and relevant details. This ensures that all users can see the disaster reports and collaborate on resource allocation in real time.

By combining user-generated data with intuitive visualization, HelpHive bridges the gap between disaster information and community response.

How we built it

The HelpHive platform leverages several technologies to deliver a seamless experience:

  1. Flask (Backend): Flask serves as the core framework for creating the web application. It connects the front end to the database, processes user input, and ensures secure interactions.
  2. HTML/CSS (Frontend): The user interface is designed with HTML and CSS to create clean, responsive, and easy-to-navigate webpages.
  3. MongoDB with Atlas (Database): We store all user data and disaster reports in a secure, cloud-hosted MongoDB database. This allows us to handle dynamic inputs and scale easily.
  4. Leaflet (Map): Leaflet powers our interactive map, which dynamically updates as users add reports.
  5. OpenCage API: The OpenCage Geocoder API ensures that submitted addresses are valid and translates them into precise geographic coordinates for mapping.

Our tech stack integrates these tools to provide users with a reliable, real-time platform for disaster reporting and visualization.

Challenges we ran into

While building HelpHive, we encountered several technical and logistical challenges:

  1. Map Integration: Displaying user-generated data on the Leaflet map in real time was particularly challenging. Synchronizing updates from the database with the map required extensive debugging and fine-tuning.
  2. Address Validation: Verifying addresses was more difficult than anticipated, especially when narrowing down to locations in West Lafayette. The accuracy of geocoding varied depending on how users inputted their addresses, leading to inconsistencies in mapping.
  3. Database Connectivity: Ensuring a secure and efficient connection between Flask and our MongoDB Atlas database required troubleshooting issues with authentication and latency.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  1. Interactive Reporting System: We successfully created a platform that allows users to log in, submit detailed disaster reports, and view them on a public map.
  2. Real-Time Map Updates: Despite initial hurdles, we connected the database to the Leaflet map so all users can see and respond to reports in real time.
  3. User-Centric Design: The platform prioritizes ease of use, with intuitive forms and an interactive map that makes accessing critical information effortless. These accomplishments demonstrate our ability to overcome technical challenges while keeping user needs at the forefront.

What we learned

The development of HelpHive was a steep learning curve, but it provided valuable experience in:

  1. Full-Stack Development: Building a platform that combines frontend, backend, and database elements taught us how to integrate and optimize these components effectively.
  2. Database Management: Working with MongoDB and Atlas gave us hands-on experience with cloud databases, particularly in structuring and querying data for a real-time application.
  3. APIs and Geocoding: Implementing the OpenCage API helped us better understand how to handle external APIs, process location data, and ensure accuracy.
  4. Problem-Solving Under Pressure: Hackathons are fast-paced environments, and we learned how to adapt quickly, prioritize features, and iterate rapidly to deliver a working demo within the deadline.

What's next for HelpHive

The potential for HelpHive extends far beyond its current capabilities. Our future goals include:

  1. Scalability: Expanding the platform to support disaster reporting across a broader geographical area, starting with the entire U.S.
  2. Resource Sharing: Introducing features that allow users to connect directly with one another to share resources, such as food, water, shelter, or transportation.
  3. Advanced Mapping: Incorporating additional map layers to highlight evacuation routes, emergency shelters, and disaster relief centers.
  4. Mobile Compatibility: Developing a mobile app for iOS and Android to ensure accessibility on the go.
  5. AI-Powered Alerts: Using machine learning to analyze patterns in user reports and provide early warnings or predictions for disaster escalation.
  6. Community Feedback: Adding a voting or commenting system for reports to prioritize urgent cases and gather additional information. HelpHive has the potential to become a transformative tool for disaster response, empowering communities to collaborate and act more efficiently in times of need.
