I am not sure I understand the benefit of this feature. It seems to me that it doesn't achieve anything different to what duolingo's own settings and mute-tab would achieve.

Duolingo's own setting stops only listening exercises without written text. Mute tab instead stops every sound from Duo.
This stops Duo from speaking written text and leaves listening untouched. It's a feature request from here: https://forum.duolingo.com/comment/19654789?comment_id=44836352 and could be the base for overriding cartoon character voices.
