The RELEASES file currently says:

The current LTS release is OpenZFS 2.1.

However with the release of 2.3, my understanding is that 2.2 should now be LTS, and 2.1 now end-of-life and unmaintained. This understanding is based off the RELEASES specifying only two concurrently maintained releases, and assuming 2.3 is “OpenZFS current”.

There are no plans to produce more releases from 2.1 branch after 2.3.0 released yesterday unless something catastrophic is found, that is unlikely. 2.2 branch may get some minor updates for another year till 2.4.0. 2.3 will receive more significant (but feature-compatible) updates for a year till 2.4.0 and then minor for another year till 2.5.0. Etc.

Yes, that’s my broad understanding, however point is that it would be nice to have the RELEASES.md file updated accordingly to reflect the current state and policy.

It sounds like this is still relevant from the releases file? Two release branches are maintained for OpenZFS

@amarshall 2.2 will become the new LTS now that 2.3 is out: #16948.
