Update some TLD servers which reference Afilias #176
base: next
Are you sure you want to change the base?

note on 'afilias.net' - Afilias was bought out by Donuts in 2020 and the combined operation is now known as Identity Digital. Afilias websites like www.afilias.info now redirect to https://www.identity.digital/ . The chances of them forgetting about afilias.net at some point are probably low but higher than zero. edit: they did already let one afilias domain which hosted a whois server lapse, so maybe that was an optimistic evaluation. |
I'm gonna extend this to update a few other afilias entries. pending. |
I was literally about to comment that I noticed other afilias.net entries in that file and wondering if those also should be updated lol. But I saw your comment above that you're reviewing those too popup right as I was about to comment. |
Afilias was bought by Donuts in 2020 and the combined entity is now called Identity Digital. I went through each entry that has 'afilias' in it to see if it needs updating. This covers ones that look straightforward: a sensible server name is in the IANA whois info, and it points to Identity Digital's catch-all server currently at 52.37.99.5 and 2600:1f13:101:c200:6a3:4cbe:e213:77ab There are several more complicated cases that I left alone and will file tickets for. Yeah, there are several. This PR now covers the simple cases. #177 is for a more complicated (but significant) one. I'll file another ticket or two for the others. |
Separate from rfc1036#176 as this one is a bit less clear-cut. The IANA info still lists whois.afilias-srs.net . However, as explained in rfc1036#176, Afilias was bought in 2020 and the successor organization is named Identity Digital; they have already let one Afilias domain which hosted a whois server lapse (see rfc1036#177) so the chances of this happening again seem non-zero, and it may be wise to change this. whois.nic.pr , following the pretty common convention that a lot of other TLDs use, is set up and points to the same Identity Digital catch-all server that whois.afilias-srs.net currently points to, so it seems like a sensible choice (and one that the maintainer of the .pr TLD cannot lose control over).
