Crew, Morale Training and Retirement

Morale

Your kerbals are mostly a happy bunch, but two things will really annoy them, and may even cause them to quit:

  • Not having enough budget to cover their wages.
  • Kerbals dying on mission.

Every kerbal will be unhappy if you can't pay them. Some kerbals will be more tolerant of this than others though, (you can get away with not paying a stupid kerbal for longer than a not so stupid one). Eventually though, if the crew aren't being paid, they will quit.

A Kerbals current morale can be seen in the Astronaut Complex

Kerbals dying will also negatively affect morale, but a Kerbal with a high "courage" stat may just shrug it off.

Kerbals will remember an "incident" for 6 months, before morale recovers.

Training

Newly recruited Kerbals are not available straight away, they will need to go through a training period first (Kerbals may also be occasionally returned to training due to a random event)

Kerbal Hire cost is fixed at 60k per kerbal (we can assume this covers training costs)

The following applies to Bureaucracy 1.4 and above

Kerbals can be trained from the "Crew" section in the main UI. The cost of training is 60k*(New Level) It takes (New Level) months to complete the training, and the Kerbal will be unavailable while they are being trained.

Retirement

Kerbals have a retirement date where they will quit your program and enjoy a quiet life eating snacks etc.

This retirement age can be delayed by sending Kerbals on a mission. Although they will still retire, the retirement age will be pushed back based on the length of the mission.
