RIR Address Geo Audit Measurements

rbeverly edited this page Dec 1, 2023 · 3 revisions

This project seeks to identify where Regional Internet Registry (RIR) registered addresses are physically used, and determine how each prefixes' physical geolocation compares to the registered RIR's responsible region. This work is an effort from the CMAND research group.

Methodology

  1. Parse bulk whois records from each RIR
  2. Identify responsive targets within registered prefixes using IP hitlist
  3. Measure RTT latency to targets from RIPE Atlas nodes on each continent
  4. Identify most likely continent to classify prefix

Measurement IDs

Each measurement to a target from a set of Atlas probes is assigned a unique measurement ID. All measurements from this project are tagged with #cmand and #neo-ip. Different measurement runs within the project additionally tagged with the run date, e.g., #neo-ip-20230927.
