Citizen Labs

Slack is the common communication tool used by Citizen Labs.

Get Slack

If you want to have Slack on the go, you can download the mobile application on the Apple Store or on Google Play, depending on your phone type. It is recommended that instead of using Slack through the browser that you consider downloading the Slack App on the Mac App Store. That way, you'll be able to get notifications on your laptop directly. It makes keeping track of messages a lot easier and a lot more fluid so it doesn't interrupt your work flow.

Now, join Citizen Labs team on Slack.

Channel Surfing

Citizen Labs has its own channel. Within that channel, there are a variety of groups. You'll want to join the following:

  • #welcome
  • #news
  • #general
  • #random

Projects have their own channel to help keep the conversations focused. Project channels are in the format: #project-projectname

Slack Tips

Here are some tips and tricks and basic etiquette rules of Slack.

  • Get somebody's attention: If you need to get a hold of someone on Slack or want to talk to a few people in a group, consider @[username] them. Don't include the brackets, though. Or consider messaging them directly so that you don't spam the group chat.

  • Get everybody's attention on a channel: If you need to address the whole channel, simply type @channel somewhere in your message. If you just need to address those who are online and on the channel, type @here somewhere in your message. It's recommended that you don't do @channel in a large group as everyone will be notified of your message, regardless of whether or not they're online or offline.

  • React to people's messages: Hover over the message that you want to react to and click on the smiley face with the plus sign next to it. Through here, there will be a pop-up or a drop-down that will show you the emoticons available to you.

  • Message yourself directly: It's an easy and mostly convenient way to keep track of your to-do list or to bounce ideas off of yourself. You can keep files and links there if you want as well, but keep in mind that depending on how often you've set your messages to delete, these messages could disappear!

  • Message Formats: There are tips on how to format your message on the Slack app itself, just below the text box. When you're talking about code and/or discussing errors that happen, consider using the options provided below it. Use the preformatted type for errors and other outputs from the command line. Use the code type for ... well, code.
